Sergio Aguero has entered the Julian Alvarez transfer debate, backing Barcelona as the ideal destination for the Atletico Madrid forward and urging him to choose the Catalan club over Arsenal should a decision be required this summer. Alvarez, 26, has established himself as one of the most coveted attackers in Europe following a productive season at Atletico, and interest from several leading clubs is expected to intensify as the window approaches.
Aguero, who played for Barcelona himself before retiring in 2021, spoke about his compatriot’s qualities and why he believes the Camp Nou would suit Alvarez’s game better than a move to north London. Speaking to Stake, the former Manchester City striker was effusive in his praise and clear in his preference.
“Julian would be a good signing for any team today. For Barca, obviously everything depends on whether he feels comfortable. There is the player side and the club side. If things go well he will be a champion of the Champions League one day.”
“It is very difficult for the player there, very complicated. But if Barca are looking at him and he is doing well, he fits perfectly. He loves football and has something not many strikers have: a very dedicated defensive side. Julian is a very complete player.”
Alvarez has been one of Atletico’s most important players since leaving Manchester City, combining goals, movement and an industrious pressing game that suits Diego Simeone’s demanding system. His 18 goals and nine assists in 46 appearances across all competitions this season have only strengthened his reputation.
Arsenal’s interest reflects Mikel Arteta’s desire to add greater versatility and attacking movement ahead of next season. The Gunners have been assessing options to strengthen their forward line and Alvarez’s profile, able to play across the front line while contributing defensively, fits the mould Arteta tends to favour. Reports suggest Arsenal could be willing to pay around £86 million to secure his signature.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are planning for the long-term future of their attack and have identified Alvarez as a player whose mobility and finishing align with what they need. Financial constraints remain a significant challenge for the club, however, and any move would need to be structured carefully.
Atletico are not expected to make Alvarez available without a fight. He is central to Simeone’s plans and the club will be reluctant to lose a player who has delivered consistently since his arrival.
