The second unit of India’s Adani Power Plant has resumed production following a technical glitch, at a time when electricity demand has decreased due to wet weather.

The 800MW unit returned to operation at approximately 7:45pm on Monday. Md Johurul Islam, Member (Generation) of the Power Development Board, confirmed the development to the TIMES of Bangladesh.

Earlier, during a briefing on the country’s power situation last Thursday, Umme Rehana, joint secretary of the Power Division, had indicated that the unit would return to production on Sunday. However, it took an additional day for the unit to become operational.

Bangladesh imports a total of 1,600MW of electricity from the power plant constructed in India’s Jharkhand state. The electricity enters the country through Rohanpur in Chapainawabganj. Supply from the first unit, providing 750MW, began in March 2023.

The plant has recently faced stability issues; on 8 April, the first unit was shut down due to a technical fault, followed by the second unit on 11 April, which significantly increased load shedding across the country.

Although the second unit was restarted after 11 days, it was shut down again on 22 April after only 11 days of operation.

Since Sunday, power demand has naturally decreased due to storms and rain. On Saturday at 6 pm, the national demand was 15,216MW against a supply of 13,186MW, resulting in 2,030MW of load shedding.

By the same time on Sunday, demand dropped to 8,974 MW with a supply of 8,908 MW, leaving only 66MW of load shedding.

The electricity situation remained significantly improved on Monday. Despite previous government announcements, residents of the capital are currently not facing any “experimental load shedding.”
