A Dhaka court on Sunday sent film actor Ashraful Haque Don, widely known for his roles as a villain, to jail in connection with the Salman Shah murder case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order after rejecting Don’s bail petition following a hearing on Sunday.
Earlier that day, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the actor from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the early hours of the morning. He was produced before the court in the afternoon, where the case’s investigation officer, CID Police Inspector Arifur Rahman, filed an application to keep him in custody.
During the proceedings, the prosecution presented information from the case allegations and investigation findings to the court, asserting Don’s involvement in the death of Salman Shah. Conversely, Don’s legal counsel moved a petition seeking his bail.
After hearing both sides, the court denied the bail plea and ordered him to be sent to prison.
The case alleges that the death of the popular actor was not a suicide but a premeditated murder.
Salman Shah’s family has consistently maintained for a long time that he was killed in a planned manner, leading investigators to collect and verify information regarding various individuals over the years.
The body of the actor, born Mohammad Shahriar Emon, was recovered from his residence in the capital’s Eskaton on 6 September 1996. His death sparked significant controversy and questions, with his family and a section of his fans claiming from the outset that it was a homicide.
The legal processes and investigations into the mystery of Salman Shah’s death have continued for nearly three decades. The case has returned to the spotlight following the arrest and imprisonment of Ashraful Haque Don, who had co-starred with Salman Shah in several films.
