Professor Abdus Salam of the Department of Chemistry has been appointed as the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Dhaka (DU).
A joint-convener of the pro-BNP teachers’ organisation “Sada Dal” (White Panel), Professor Salam was appointed to the post on 13 April.
On Wednesday, he officially assumed his responsibilities at a ceremony organised in the Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom. The event was attended by Vice Chancellor Professor A B M Obaidul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha, deans of various faculties, hall provosts, departmental chairpersons, and other teachers and officials.
Welcoming the newly appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor stated that everyone must work unitedly to ensure the university’s academic excellence, administrative transparency, and accountability. He remarked, “Maintaining an academic environment while remaining above partisan views is one of the primary challenges for Dhaka University”.
During the event, the Vice Chancellor also wished for the speedy recovery of students injured in a bus accident earlier that morning. Highlighting the importance of appointing the “right person to the right position,” he added that an institution can achieve its desired progress only through correct decision-making.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Sayema Haque Bidisha noted that the crucial position required a skilled and qualified academic personality, a requirement met by the appointment of Professor Abdus Salam.
Upon taking office, Professor Abdus Salam expressed his gratitude to Almighty Allah and pledged to work with sincerity to uphold the dignity and reputation of the university. He expressed that his journey from being a student to becoming a teacher and now an administrator at this level is a matter of great pride for him.
