Aviation and Aerospace University, Bangladesh (AAUB), the country’s first and only public university dedicated to aviation and aerospace, has secured the championship title at the International Light Aircraft Design Competition organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), UK.
The final round was held on 10 November 2025. AAUB outperformed 35 universities, institutions, and competing teams to claim the top position marking the first time a Bangladeshi university team has won first place in an international aircraft design competition, according to a press release.
RAeS, the world’s only professional society devoted exclusively to aerospace and aviation, arranges the Light Aircraft Design Competition annually.
This year’s challenge required teams to design an amphibious aircraft capable of carrying 6 to 8 passengers, with the ability to take off and land on both land and water, and to present a complete basic aircraft design.
The results were announced during the RAeS annual conference in London on 10 November 2025. Immediately after the announcement, AAUB’s “Bihongo” team—represented by Faculty Advisor Group Captain Dr Saifur Rahman Bakaul and students of the same department Md Redwan Hasan and Nusrat Binte Alam presented the engineering and technical aspects of their design.
Their presentation highlighted aerodynamics, propulsion, stability, avionics, performance, and mission profile. They also demonstrated, through graphical illustrations, how the aircraft could contribute to coral reef restoration and biodiversity recovery from the air.
Officials noted that the Vice Chancellor, along with faculty members, officers, and employees of the university played an important role in supporting the design process of AAUB’s light aircraft.
The Vice Chancellor congratulated the “Bihongo” team for the achievement and said the win would serve as a historic milestone for both the university and Bangladesh.
