Dhaka University (DU) Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Abdus Salam has discussed ongoing research into air pollution and environmental lead contamination in Bangladesh with Yan He, a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University in the United States.

During the meeting, they discussed ongoing research initiatives, their potential public health impacts, data collection, sample analysis and prospects for future collaboration, said a press release on Tuesday.

Yan He briefed the DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor on the ‘Project Unleaded’ and ‘Airborne Lead Study’ in Bangladesh. The studies aim to assess the presence of lead and other heavy metals in the air and environment, alongside air pollution levels in different parts of the country.

The discussions also covered potential sampling locations, including industrial areas, brick kiln sites and different geographical regions.

The meeting explored opportunities to use Dhaka University’s existing air quality monitoring and research data, install sampling equipment at different locations and improve research reliability through comparative analysis.

The participants also emphasised collaborative research to assess the public health impacts of air pollution, particularly its harmful effects on respiratory health.
