RAB has arrested three individuals, including the parents of the main accused Faisal, in connection with the attempted murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

At the same time, the gun and bullet used to carry out the shooting, in addition to the motorcycle (and the accompanying fake number plate) on which suspects Faisal and Alamgir rode in and escaped from the scene of the crime have also been recovered by law enforcement.

Parents-turned-accomplices

Acting on a tip, RAB-10 conducted a special operation in the Hasnabad Housing area of South Keraniganj police station in Dhaka in the early hours of Tuesday and arrested Faisal’s father, Md Humayun Kabir (70), and mother, Mosammat Hashi Begum (60).

RAB stated that, during preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that, on the night of the incident, Faisal had gone to his elder sister Mosammat Jesmin Akhter’s house in the water tank area of Colonel Road, West Agargaon, carrying a bag.

Later, having left the bag in an empty space next to the building, Faisal asked his 18-year-old nephew Jamil to bring the bag to him. Then, Faisal proceeded to throw away one of his two phones from the roof of the house, handing the other to his mother.

He then left Agargaon for Shahjadpur through Mirpur, spending the night at the house of relative on his father’s side.

Meanwhile, according to a press statement issued by RAB-10, Faisal’s father carried out the responsibility of removing the bag from their premises. However, it was unclear from the language used how exactly this was done, but a CNG-run autorickshaw had been used in the process, this much was clear.

Later, Faisal’s parents went to the house of their younger son, Hasan Mahmud Babul alias Raj, in Keraniganj, replacing their old phone numbers with new ones purchased from Juraine.

In connection with the same incident, another youth – also named Faisal (25) – was detained from the Tarua area of Narsingdi Sadar police station on suspicion of attempting to recover the weapon and ammunition used in the murder attempt.

At long last, the (attempted) murder weapon, getaway car

Prior to the recovery of the weapon, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police recovered the motorcycle used in the attack, a helmet, and a fake number plate abandoned in the Bonolata residential area of West Agargaon under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station in the capital.

Deputy Police Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Department, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, stated that the recovered motorcycle and other evidence were used in the attack.

The motorcycle had been purchased under the name of Mainuddin Islam using the national ID card of Faisal’s associate, Kabir.

The ownership of the motorcycle had changed a whopping eight before becoming part of an assassination attempt on a prospective candidate for Dhaka-8 one fateful Friday in December.

Matter over mind

Meanwhile, Osman Hadi’s physical condition, stable yesterday, began to slip once more.

According to a post on Inqilab Moncho’s official Facebook page, Hadi’s brain  was currently “not active”, with surgery now necessary to have a fighting chance at recovery.

However, doctors have said that his physical condition needs to be stable before  Hadi could be operated upon.

The primary goal of the doctors attending to Hadi right now, according to the Facebook post, is to reestablish the connection between the body and the brain.

If his physical condition refuses to stabilise, however, there is a possibility that that Hadi might be taken to the UK for more advanced treatment.
