Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has voiced strong concerns over the recent amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and the current political situation ahead of the national polls.
In a video message during a meeting with the professionals at his Chauddagram constituency in Cumilla on Saturday morning, Taher criticised the Advisory Council’s decision last week, calling it a concession to an unreasonable demand from a particular political party.
“This raises serious questions about the government’s neutrality,” he said.
He alleged that the government’s past actions have consistently favoured a specific party, citing the announcement of the election roadmap under pressure during the Chief Adviser’s London visit and the recent reversal of earlier Advisory Council decisions as examples.
Taher also condemned the council’s reconsideration of its earlier decision on party symbols for the upcoming election, arguing that it undermined government impartiality.
“We do not accept this decision and strongly condemn it. We demand reinstatement of the earlier decision. Otherwise, protests will take place on the streets,” he warned.
Addressing political tensions surrounding the BNP, he described the situation as “undesirable” and emphasised that the people expect a national election in February.
“Creating uncertainty just before the polls will hinder the election process. We hope the Chief Adviser will not yield to any pressure,” he said.
On the July Charter, Taher cautioned that delaying its legal recognition would abandon the government’s reform agenda, adding, “The nation does not believe the Chief Adviser would destroy his own reform plan.”
He concluded by urging the Chief Adviser to take a firm stance and announce bold decisions to implement the reforms.
