West Indies coach and former cricketer Darren Sammy has praised Bangladeshi fans for their passion but voiced concern over some of their behaviour during the recent T20I series.
The Caribbean side secured a 3-0 series sweep over Bangladesh, dominating in every match. Chattogram’s stadiums were packed throughout the series, and naturally, some disappointed supporters reacted after their team’s defeats, with a few even offering prayers to the players.
Sammy commended the enthusiasm of Bangladeshi fans, saying, “The supporters here are fantastic. Whenever I come, I always praise them. Even though I’m not playing now, they show love and support consistently.”
However, he expressed disapproval of certain actions from the crowd, particularly the ‘bhua-bhua’ chants aimed at players. “I did not like the way some fans treated the players. They were shouting things like ‘bhua-bhua’. I understand what it means. Fans should support the players; every cricketer wants to perform well, so encouragement is far better than criticism,” he added.
During practice sessions, Sammy also highlighted the talent among Bangladesh’s net bowlers. Addressing rumours about sending a young bowler to the CPL, he clarified, “I did not do anything like that. I don’t know where these stories came from. I have been in Bangladesh for 15 years. The people here are wonderful. We appreciate it when bowlers perform well in the nets. When you see talent, you give guidance and advice. I’ve seen some really promising skills among the youngsters.”
