All forms of public gatherings, including rally, procession and demonstration, in areas adjacent to Dhaka Cantonment have been banned for an indefinite period with intent to maintain public order and ensure citizens’ safety.
The moratorium takes effect from Sunday, according to a notice issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) on Saturday.
The restricted zones encompass key thoroughfares and landmarks, including Kachukhet Road, the stretch from Bijoy Sarani to the Chief Adviser’s Office, the vicinity of Jahangir Gate, areas surrounding BAF Shaheen College, Mohakhali flyover, Sainik Club intersection, Bhashantek, Matikata and ECB Chattar.
The ISPR stated that the decision was made “in the interest of public movement and maintaining law and order,” and will remain in effect until further notice.
Meanwhile, in a separate press release, the directorate confirmed the arrest of a former soldier, Md Naeemul Islam, for allegedly planning a major act of sabotage under the guise of a protest near the entrance of Dhaka Cantonment.
It said Naeemul had been collaborating with other dismissed or discharged ex-military personnel since August 5, 2024. They had been disseminating provocative statements through various media outlets and social sites, inciting unrest.
The group reportedly planned to stage a disruptive demonstration on May 18, 2025, at the cantonment’s entrance.
The ISPR detailed that, around 2:00 pm on Saturday, a military team attempted to contact Naeemul in the Khilkhet area of Dhaka.
During this encounter, Naeemul and his associates allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on the military personnel using local weapons.
A nearby army patrol unit responded promptly, apprehending Naeemul along with two of his accomplices.
Naeemul was previously fired from service due to allegations of demanding dowry from his wife, as well as engaging in physical and psychological abuse. He was also accused of violating military discipline on multiple occasions.
Legal proceedings concerning his recent activities are currently underway.
