A Dhaka court on Sunday deferred the submission of the investigation report in the murder case of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Tariquzzaman Sunny for the 43rd time.
Dhaka Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman has 6 October as the new date after the investigating officer, SI Mashiur Rahman of the Kutubpur River Police Outpost, failed to submit the report on the scheduled date.
SI Mazharul Islam of the prosecution department confirmed the development.
According to court records, Sani, along with 15 others, went on a trip from Dhaka to Mainot Ghat in Munshiganj on 14 July, 2022. The group travelled on eight motorcycles.
Later that night, Sani went missing after reportedly falling into the Padma River. Fire Service personnel recovered his body from an area near the spot around noon the following day.
Sani’s elder brother, Hasanujzaman, filed a case that night, alleging that Sani had been thrown into the river and killed.
Fifteen of his fellow travellers were named as accused in the case.
The accused were later arrested and sent to jail. They are now out on bail.
The accused are Shariful Hossain, Shakil Ahmed, Sezan Ahmed, Rubel, Sajib, Nurjaman, Nasir, Maruf, Ashraful Alam, Jahangir Hossain Liton, Noman, Zahid, ATM Shahriar Momin, Maruful Haque Maruf and Rokonuzzaman alias Jitu.
Officials of the Kutubpur River Police Outpost have been investigating the case since it was filed.
The prolonged delay in submitting the investigation report has drawn frustration from Sani’s family, who have expressed concern over the lack of progress in the case.
