The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday set June 1 for delivering its judgment on Jamaat-e-Islami’s appeal seeking restoration of its political party registration. A four-member bench headed by Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed fixed the date after concluding hearings on legal arguments from both sides.

Senior Advocate Ehsan Siddique and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented the petitioner.

The court had revived Jamaat’s previously dismissed appeal on October 22, 2024. The legal battle dates back to August 1, 2013, when the High Court declared Jamaat’s registration illegal. The Election Commission subsequently cancelled the registration through a gazette notification on December 7, 2018.

Jamaat-e-Islami later appealed challenging the High Court verdict.

Jamaat’s appeal suffered a setback in November 2023 when a six-member Appellate Division bench dismissed the case due to the absence of its lead counsel, upholding the High Court’s verdict.

The then Awami League-led government had banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir on August 1, 2024, under the Anti-Terrorism Act. However, the ban was lifted through another gazette notification on August 28 the same year.
