The Jagannath University (JnU) Teachers’ Association has demanded that the university’s treasurer be appointed from among its own faculty members.
The organisation also warned that if an external candidate is appointed to the post, they will not be allowed to enter the campus.
These demands were presented during an emergency press conference held at the university’s teacher lounge at 11am on Sunday.
Speaking at the conference, General Secretary Professor Imranul Hoque, noted that there are currently 732 teachers at JnU, including 245 professors. He argued that the university’s own teachers are well-acquainted with the institution’s realities and problems; therefore, a qualified internal candidate should be appointed as treasurer.
Imranul further stated that since JnU teachers can serve as vice-chancellors and treasurers at various other universities across the country, there is no justification for appointing someone from outside to their own institution. He reiterated the warning that any external appointee would be barred from the campus.
The Acting President Professor Manjur Morshed Bhuiyan, remarked that the association does not only represent teachers but also acts as the guardians of the students. He emphasised that they would remain united in achieving logical demands for the welfare of the university.
The press conference was attended by teacher leaders as well as representatives of the university’s officials, employees, and students.
They announced their commitment to stay united under the banner of “Team Jagannath” to uphold the university’s logical interests.
The issue of appointing a new treasurer has gained momentum following a series of administrative changes in various universities across the country after the change in government.
