Bangladesh pacer Marufa Akter, who made a strong impression early in the Women’s World Cup with her swing bowling, was left out of the playing XI in the match against Australia. Her absence led to speculation about a possible injury, but batter Sobhana Mostary clarified the decision following the game.

Speaking after scoring a half-century, Mostary said, “Whether Marufa played or not was the management or captain’s call. She has recovered well from a hand injury that kept her out for a year. They probably felt she should be rested today so she can be used properly in the next two important matches. Our spinners are also doing well.”

Batting first, Bangladesh made a solid start but fell short of crossing the 200-run mark, finishing on 198. It was their highest total against Australia in women’s one-day internationals. Sobhana Mostary top-scored with 66, while Rubaiya Haider Jhillik contributed 44. Previously, Bangladesh had never scored more than 150 against Australia in this format.

Reflecting on the performance, Mostary said, “Australia’s batters played very well. Alana King and Georgia Wareham also bowled well. We lost wickets quickly and could not play our shots. That is why we could not post a bigger total. In five matches, our batting has not been strong but our bowling has been good. Even today it was not bad, but they batted very well. We hope to come back strongly in the next match.”

Australia, the seven-time World Cup champions, showed their class by chasing the target with ease. Alyssa Healy scored 113 and Phoebe Litchfield remained unbeaten on 84 as they reached the target in just 24.5 overs without losing a wicket.

The result confirmed Australia as the first team to qualify for the semi-finals with four wins and one no result in five matches. Bangladesh, on the other hand, are now facing an uphill battle to remain in the competition, with their hopes of progression narrowing.
