Police intercepted the agitating teachers of MPO-listed educational institutions from marching towards the Secretariat in the capital on Tuesday.
The teachers organised the “March to Secretariat” programme to realise their demands, including increases in house rent and other allowances.
The march began around 4pm from the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital, but police stopped the protesters on their way to the Secretariat.
Delwar Hossain Azizi, president of the alliance of MPO-listed Teachers Seeking Nationalisation and member secretary of Bangladesh Madrasa Teachers and Employees Forum, said their protest programme has been postponed, but not cancelled.
The teachers launched the protest to press home for a 20% house rent allowance, Tk 1,500 in medical allowance, and a 75% festival bonus for employees.
After staging a sit-in and a hunger strike, they also launched a work abstention programme to meet their demands.
