BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasised that the country’s political and economic future is closely tied to the upcoming polls, stating, “There is no alternative to democracy. Democracy is the only alternative to democracy.”
Fakhrul made these remarks on Tuesday afternoon as the chief guest at an extended meeting of the Sadar Upazila and Ruhia Thana unit BNP at the Thakurgaon District Shilpakala Academy hall.
Addressing the invited leaders and activists, he urged caution, saying, “We must step forward carefully. We cannot fall into the hands of fascists due to political errors. We do not want to witness fascism.”
He further added, “After years of monstrous misrule, democracy was restored in the country through the people’s uprising. Many have endured severe persecution over the last 16 years, including being imprisoned on false charges.”
Mirza Fakhrul expressed his gratitude to those who played a brave role in challenging autocracy during the July uprising. “Now we can breathe freely. Our leaders and activists can sleep peacefully at night. We are thankful to the courageous warriors of July,” he said.
The extended meeting was also attended by district BNP president Mirza Faisal Amin, general secretary Paygam Ali, Sadar president Abdul Hamid, and general secretary Mahabub Hossain Tuhin.
