Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain has expressed dissatisfaction over a recent comment made by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri regarding Bangladesh’s upcoming national election.
“Such a comment is completely unwarranted,” Touhid Hossain said while speaking to journalists at the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka on Wednesday.
He stressed that elections are an entirely internal matter for Bangladesh, adding, “It is not their business.”
Earlier on Monday, Indian Foreign Secretary Misri told a group of visiting Bangladeshi journalists in New Delhi that India wanted to see “free, fair, inclusive, and participatory elections” in Bangladesh and hoped the polls would be held at the earliest possible time.
He further said India would engage with whichever government comes to power through the democratic process, noting, “It will be a government elected by popular mandate, and we will work with whichever government the people of Bangladesh choose to represent them.”
Referring to the proposed election schedule for February, Misri added, “We hope the elections will be held without delay, and we look forward to engaging with any government that emerges from this process.”
