OpenAI has introduced Sora 2, its most advanced AI video and audio generation model, along with a new social app that rivals platforms like TikTok and YouTube. The app allows users to create high-definition videos with sound using text prompts and a special Cameos feature, which lets people insert themselves, friends, or even animals into AI-generated scenes.

OpenAI says Sora 2 is a major leap in AI video. The model produces realistic motion, obeys the laws of physics, and generates synchronised dialogue and sound effects. Unlike earlier systems that bent reality, Sora 2 can model both success and failure naturally. “Sora 2 represents significant progress towards general-purpose
world simulators. It is better to obey the laws of physics and can even model failure, not just success,” the company said.

The iOS app is designed to promote creativity rather than endless scrolling. Users can create, remix, and share videos in a feed biased towards inspiration, not time spent online. OpenAI emphasises safety: teenagers will have daily limits, stricter cameo permissions, and parental controls. Human moderators will review bullying cases, and users control where their likeness appears.

The app is launching first in the U.S. and Canada on an invite-only basis. Sora 2 will be free with generous limits, while ChatGPT Pro users can access a higher-quality Sora 2 Pro version online.

With this move, OpenAI enters direct competition with tech giants like Google, Meta, and ByteDance, aiming to reshape online content creation. The company hopes Sora 2 will “bring joy, creativity and connection” while paving the way for AI systems that better understand and simulate the physical world.
