Stand-in captain Jaker Ali Anik has confirmed that Bangladesh will stick to the same game plan when they take on Pakistan on Thursday, despite their narrow defeat to India in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup.
Had the Tigers managed to beat India, their place in the final would have been almost certain. Even after restricting the opposition to 168, Bangladesh were unable to secure victory, a result that will linger as a disappointment for the team.
Thursday’s clash will be the final Super Four match for both sides, with the winner earning a spot in the final. In other words, it is a do-or-die encounter. Jaker, who led the team against India, insisted that the team would maintain its focus and approach.
“Throughout the Asia Cup, our batting has been solid and our bowling has complemented it well,” Jaker said. “However, we failed with the bat against India, so tomorrow our focus will be on correcting that. Our plan remains the same. We must perform with the bat if we want to win. There is no reason to be disheartened. Tomorrow’s match is as crucial for them as it is for us, and we will aim to perform at our best to secure victory.”
Against India, only Saif Hassan made a significant contribution, scoring a superb 69 off 51 balls with five sixes. The only other batsman to reach double figures was Parvez Hossain Emon, who managed 21 off 19 deliveries. Jaker acknowledged that the batting failures were the primary reason Bangladesh fell short.
Calling for a collective improvement from the batters, Jaker added: “It’s not about who is performing well or poorly. We need to play to our strengths. Today we were unable to perform at our batting best, which made the match so challenging. We know the opposition, but to win, we must play our best cricket. We will aim to perform strongly in all areas.”
