The results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and Hall Union elections have begun to be announced.
At 5:15pm on Saturday, election officials began announcing the results at the Senate Building.
Voting for both JUCSU and Hall Union elections started at 9am on Thursday and continued until 5pm. The vote counting was completed on Saturday afternoon around 2:30pm.
A total of 11,747 voters were registered for this year’s elections, with nearly 8,000 casting their votes.
A total of 178 candidates were approved to contest in various positions in the JUCSU elections. Among them, nine candidates competed for the Vice President (VP) position, nine for General Secretary (GS), six for Joint General Secretary (Female), and ten for Joint General Secretary (Male).
Voting took place at 224 booths across the university’s 21 halls, including 10 female halls and 11 male halls. Voters cast their ballots in a total of 40 ballots, including those for both JUCSU and Hall Union elections.
Of the total candidates for JUCSU, 25% were female, while 75% were male. There were no female candidates contesting for the VP position, two female candidates out of 15 for GS, and no female candidates for four other positions.
Among all Hall Union candidates, 24.4% were female. Additionally, five halls for female students did not have candidates for 15 available positions.
In this election, eight panels participated, supported by left-leaning groups, Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Dal, and independents. However, five panels, including the Chhatra Dal-backed panel, boycotted the election, citing allegations of irregularities.
