US President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will host next year’s G20 summit at his Trump National Doral resort in Miami, reviving a plan he abandoned during his first term following accusations of corruption.
Trump, 79, described the resort as the “ideal choice” for the December 2026 gathering, citing its proximity to the airport, ample facilities, and “beautiful” surroundings. “Everybody wants it there… it’s beautiful,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.
The billionaire president, who has long faced allegations of profiting from his political office, insisted he would not earn money from the event. “We will not make any money on it. I just want it to go well,” he said, adding that Miami hotels are usually fully booked in December and that each delegation would have its “own building.”
Trump had planned to host the 2020 G7 summit at Doral but dropped the idea after an outcry from Democrats, who called it blatant corruption. That summit was later cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This time, Trump signalled openness to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping attending the G20, even as observers. “I would love them to, if they want to,” he said, despite Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and both countries already being G20 members.
The president also confirmed he will skip this year’s G20 in South Africa, sending Vice President JD Vance in his place.
