A bus plunged into a canal on the Laxmipur-Dhaka road, killing two people on Saturday, according to the police.

A bus of ‘Ananda Paribahan’ fell into the Rahmatkhali canal at around 8am in front of the Chandraganj Kafil Uddin Degree College after the driver lost control over the steering, leaving at least five people injured, said Mobarak Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Highway Police Station.

He added 14 people were rescued from the canal alive, and some managed to swim ashore.

The injured were taken to a local hospital where the doctors declared two of them dead. The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, reports UNB.

Police and local fire service men rushed to the spot once informed and conducted a rescue operation.

Vehicular movement on the Laxmipur-Dhaka regional highway remained suspended for an hour following the accident, creating a long tailback on both sides of the road.
