The Chamber Court has suspended a High Court order that had stayed the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election.
Shishir Monir, the lawyer representing Dhaka University, confirmed the development during a press briefing.
Monir stated, “The Dhaka University authorities are very serious and sincere about organising the DUCSU election. The university believes that the election will create a new culture among students in the country, which is why it is being held.”
He further explained, “After a writ petition, a rule was issued, and the election was stayed. Recognising the importance of the matter, we quickly filed a written appeal to the Chamber Court.”
Monir added, “The Chamber Court has suspended the order that had stayed the DUCSU election. This means there is currently no obstacle to conducting the DUCSU election at Dhaka University.”
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, the High Court had issued an order staying the DUCSU election until October 30. The court also sought information on the nomination process, selection, finalisation of candidates, and preparations for voting.
The bench, comprising Justice Habibur Gani and Justice SK Tahsin Ali, passed the order.
Present at the hearing were Advocate Shishir Monir representing Dhaka University and Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua representing the petitioner.
On August 31, a writ was filed challenging the candidacy of SM Forhad from the Islami Chhatra Shibir panel for the position of General Secretary (GS) in the DUCSU election. The bench led by Justices SK Tahsin Ali and Habibur Gani accepted the writ for hearing.
The writ was filed by BM Fahmida Alam, the candidate for the Secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movements from the left-wing alliance’s “Aparajeyo 71, Adomyo 24” panel.
The petition raised concerns about SM Forhad’s candidacy, questioning how he could be nominated for the Islami Chhatra Shibir panel after being part of the Chhatra League committee before August 5 last year.
As per the schedule, the DUCSU elections is set to take place on September 9, from 8am to 4pm.
