Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus is set to hold crucial discussions with leaders from major political parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and NCP, on Sunday to address key concerns ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, scheduled for February 2026.
These talks will take place at the Chief Adviser’s official residence at 3pm with BNP, 4:30pm with Jamaat, and 6pm with NCP.
The meetings, confirmed by CA’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam, reflect the government’s ongoing effort to maintain communication with political factions in these tense times. The aim is to ensure a free and fair election process despite rising political uncertainty.
Yunus had previously met with these political parties on July 22, 2025, following nationwide protests sparked by the tragic aviation accident of July 21. During that meeting, he urged political leaders to come together for a peaceful electoral process. Over the past year, these talks have become a regular feature in efforts to reduce political unrest.
The meetings come in the wake of violent clashes near the Jatiya Party’s office on Friday, where Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur was severely injured in what is believed to be an attack by police and military personnel. The attack has heightened tensions, prompting Muhammad Yunus to call for immediate discussions.
The government remains firm in its stance that the 2026 elections will occur in February, despite ongoing debates about the electoral framework. Concerns remain among opposition parties about the implementation of the July Agreement, with Jamaat-e-Islami also calling for the introduction of the Proportional Representation (PR) system.
In a separate meeting on Saturday, key advisers such as National Security adviser Khalilur Rahman and special assistant Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury discussed the assault on Nurul Haque Nur. The Chief Adviser’s office emphasized that any attempts to delay or disrupt the election would be strongly opposed.
“The February elections will proceed as scheduled. Any efforts to derail them will be met with strong resistance from the interim government and those committed to democratic values,” a statement from the Chief Adviser’s office affirmed.
