The government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of mob violence, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release issued Friday night.
“The government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against all types of mob violence. The Bangladesh Army reaffirms this decision and stands ready to take a firm stance against such violence in order to ensure public safety and security,” the ISPR statement said. “The army remains committed to maintaining public safety, law and order and peace.”
According to the release, around 8:00 pm on Friday a clash broke out between activists of two political parties in the capital’s Kakrail area, leaving several people injured. Army and police were deployed to bring the situation under control.
“Police initially arrived at the scene and attempted to control the situation. However, as the clash intensified, they sought assistance from the Army. When police personnel reached the spot, they came under attack and several members were injured,” ISPR said.
The statement noted that security forces first urged both sides to remain calm, disperse peacefully, and resolve differences within the framework of existing laws.
“Despite repeated appeals, some activists ignored the calls and attempted to create unrest through mob violence. They launched coordinated attacks on law enforcement personnel and escalated the violence further with a torch procession around 9:00 pm,” the release added.
According to the ISPR, the attackers hurled bricks and stones, attempted to set fire to several establishments, and severely disrupted public movement in Bijoynagar, Naya Paltan and adjacent areas, causing public suffering.
“All efforts for a peaceful resolution were rejected. As a result, law enforcement had no choice but to use force to protect public safety,” ISPR said, adding that five army personnel were injured in the incident.
