A letter has been sent to the US Department of State, local police, and the mayor, requesting action regarding the recent incident at the Bangladesh Consulate General in New York.
The letter was sent by the the Bangladesh Consulate General in New York itself, who disclosed information regarding the matter in a press release.
The press release stated that on the occasion of the first anniversary of the July Mass Uprising Day, a discussion event was held at the Bangladesh Consulate General in New York on Sunday. The chief guest was Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam.
Additionally, nearly one hundred and fifty guests, including Bangladeshi students and members of the Bangladeshi community, were present at the event. For security reasons, at the request of the Bangladesh Consulate, the New York City Police deployed sufficient personnel before the event began.
The press release mentioned that, with the intention of disrupting the discussion event and harboring violent motives to directly attack the chief guest, leaders and activists of the Awami League’s US branch and its affiliate organisations had gathered in front of the consulate from 5pm onwards.
They chanted various slogans against the Bangladesh government, used obscene language for abuse, and at one point, chased arriving guests to prevent them from participating in the event. They also employed various other malicious tactics, the press release said.
As part of this, they threw eggs at the guests. Furthermore, they damaged the glass door of an adjacent office (in the same building) near the consulate entrance, causing it to crack. The police intervened to prevent the miscreants from continuing such destructive actions and detained several individuals.
Photographs and video footage of these activities have already been provided to the police as evidence, the statement read. Authorities have assured the consulate that appropriate legal action will be taken in this matter.
The press release further stated that accomplices of the defeated fascist government remained stationed around the consulate, including with party flags of the Awami League, until midnight, with the intent to harass and endanger the life of the chief guest. However, police were present throughout for security purposes.
The chief guest arrived at the consulate by car at the scheduled time via the designated route and reached the event venue without any hindrance. After a discussion, exchanging greetings with guests, and having dinner, the chief guest departed in his designated vehicle to his destination without any untoward incident. The police left the venue after the chief guest had departed.
The Consulate General has already sent letters to the local police, the mayor, and the local office of the US Department of State, requesting action against the miscreants.
The press release added that there was no encounter, remote connection, or involvement between the chief guest and the miscreants during his arrival or departure from the event. Despite all their efforts, the accomplices of the defeated fascist government could not achieve their “malicious” objectives.
Having failed completely in this endeavour, they are now spreading various false information and propaganda on social media and other digital platforms, the release claims. The Consulate General went on to urge everyone not to be misled by such false information and propaganda.
