The national election will be held in February, with no possibility of delay, reaffirmed Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

Implementing the July Charter will make the election roadmap clearer, he said.

He was speaking to reporters while visiting Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur on Wednesday.

He said that in past local elections at city corporation, municipal and upazila levels, irregularities such as vote-rigging and centre takeovers had led to the dissolution of those institutions.

However, union parishads were not dissolved due to insufficient manpower for local governance. Considering public suffering, he stressed the need to restructure local government and hold elections at that level first, though political consensus has been lacking.

He said the government has worked to address budget inequalities.

Earlier, he paid tribute to Shaheed Abu Sayed, an English Department student of the university and leader of the anti-discrimination student movement.

After the wreath-laying, he exchanged greetings with the university vice-chancellor and students, who requested him to provide two buses to resolve campus transportation issues and assistance for indoor and outdoor stadium development.
