A shooting incident targeted a businessman’s house in Hathazari, Chattogram. Police have inspected the scene. The businessman has claimsed that the incident occurred because he refused to pay a Tk50 lakh extortion demand.
The incident took place around 10:45am on Wednesday at the house of Abul Kashem in North Mekhal of No 8 Mekhal Union, Hathazari. The businessman, Jahangir, owns a brickfield and a housing construction company. He resides in the city.
Sources indicate that around 11am on Wednesday, six unidentified youths arrived on two motorcycles in front of the house of businessman Md Jahangir Alam. Four of them then entered the premises, fired several rounds, and fled quickly.
Police reported that bullet marks were found on two glass windows of the second-floor balcony, and nine empty bullet casings and one live bullet were recovered abandoned near the building. Upon learning of the incident, senior officials from district police and law enforcement agencies visited the scene.
Additional Superintendent of Police for Hathazari Circle Kazi Md Tareq Aziz told Times of Bangladesh, “We have inspected the scene. We spoke to businessman Jahangir over the phone. He lives in Chattogram city with his family and owns a brickfield and housing construction business. No formal complaint has been filed yet regarding this incident, but they have indicated they will come to the police station to file one. We are continuing efforts to identify the suspects.”
In response to a question, Tareq Aziz added, “Fifteen days ago, a WhatsApp number called businessman Jahangir Alam demanding Tk50 lakh in extortion. At the time, he did not take the matter seriously. After today’s shooting, the businessman believes the extortionists fired at his house because they did not receive the money.”
