The interim government plans to procure at least 40,000 body-worn cameras to strengthen security at polling centres during the upcoming general election in February 2026.
The matter was discussed on Saturday at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka.
Security Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Special Assistants to the Chief Adviser Khoda Box Chowdhury and Foyez Toyab Ahmed attended the meeting.
Foyez Toyab Ahmed said the procurement process for the 40,000 devices — commonly known as bodycams — was in its final stage. “These devices will enhance security at thousands of high-risk polling stations,” he said.
“We want the bodycams in place by October so the police force can receive adequate training on their key features, including AI capabilities,” he added.
Authorities have approached three companies from Germany, China and Thailand to supply the cameras. Police officers and constables will wear the devices on their chests during the election.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus instructed officials to expedite the purchase and ensure proper training for thousands of police personnel. “We must ensure full security at all polling stations, whatever the cost. Our aim is to make the February election the most free, fair and peaceful in the country’s history,” he said.
At the meeting, the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant for Telecommunications and ICT also announced plans to launch an election app ahead of the polls.
The app will provide detailed information on the February election, including candidate profiles, polling centre updates and a system for lodging complaints. The Chief Adviser directed officials to launch the app quickly and ensure it is user-friendly.
