The first spell of rain after Pahela Boishakh drenched Dhaka and elsewhere across the country on Wednesday noon, providing much-needed relief from the ongoing oppressive summertime temperature.
The clear blue sky over Dhaka became overcast with clouds, giving city-dwellers an early taste of evening darkness. This shift in weather brought gusty winds, followed by driving rain in parts of the capital, including Banani, Gulshan, Motijheel, Fakirapool, Purana Paltan, the Press Club area and nearby neighbourhoods, bringing some respite from the summer heat.
Light rain, accompanied by flashes of lightning, was also reported from several parts of the city, including Panthapath, as storm clouds gathered over the capital.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), an extended trough of low pressure lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas, while the season’s regular low-pressure system is stationed over the South Bay.
In its 24-hour forecast from 9:00 am on Wednesday, the Met office said scattered thunderstorms with temporary gusty winds, lightning, and rain are likely in parts of Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
Some areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions could also see rain or thunderstorms, it added.
There is also a possibility of isolated hailstorms in some areas, the forecast warned.
Weathermen earlier predicted rain or thunder showers with lightning flashes and temporary gusty wind at a few places over Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions with hails at isolated places.

Day and night temperature might remain nearly unchanged over the country, according to it.
The Met office recorded maximum temperature of Wednesday as 35.8 degrees Celsius at Feni in Chattogram division, while minimum temperature as 19.6 degrees Celsius at Tentulia under Rangpur division, said a release signed by meteorologist Dr Md Omar Faruq.
