Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has termed the fire incident at Dhaka University’s Fine Arts Faculty— which destroyed several motifs prepared for the Bengali New Year celebration— as a “deliberate act.” He suspects that “associates of the ousted regime” were behind the blaze that burned down the artistic installations.

In a post from his verified Facebook page on Saturday morning, Farooki alleged: Hasina’s allies torched the effigy of fascism at Charukala in the early hours. Whether they belong to the soft Awami League or its B-Team, all those responsible must be brought under the law — swiftly.

“Those working to stop this procession on behalf of the Awami League will not only be held accountable under the law, but we will also ensure that this year’s procession becomes even more meaningful,” he wrote blaming the Awami League for the incident.

Following the incident, Farooki wrote that “Hasina’s cohorts made it clear — they do not want to see the people of Bangladesh unite in celebration. We are now more determined than ever and will participate in even greater numbers.”

Regarding the motif symbolising “the face of fascism,” Farooki noted: In recent days, many supporting the July Movement had suggested this year’s procession would be the most inclusive and different in character — that perhaps it was best not to feature that grotesque fascist face. We were considering all perspectives and consulting university authorities. But after last night’s attack, the presence of this monster has become all the more essential. July continues.
