Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Tuesday warned that BNP leaders and activists who betray the party or oppose its nominated candidates in the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) elections would face expulsion.

He issued the warning while addressing a views-exchange meeting with Shailkupa upazila BNP leaders and activists at the party office in Jhenaidah at 10am.

Asaduzzaman said all party members must work for whoever receives the BNP nomination, regardless of their personal preferences.

He warned that anyone obstructing the party’s electoral efforts would be expelled.

The minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would provide guidelines for party members to follow during the local government elections, and those who violated them would face disciplinary action.

He also warned that Tarique would not forgive those who betrayed the party from within.

Outlining the candidate selection process, Asaduzzaman said reports on every union would be stored in the Prime Minister’s computer system, giving him direct access to information from the grassroots.

He said the party would prioritise candidates capable of winning elections rather than those with senior positions or personal influence.

Even prominent leaders would not receive nominations if there was a risk of defeat, he added.

“If my party does not win, what purpose does a big leader like me serve? If BNP had not come to power today, no matter how prominent a leader or how good a person I am, it would not matter,” he said.

Asaduzzaman described the party as his greatest source of trust and said nominating a preferred candidate who subsequently lost an election would be unacceptable.

He warned that party activities were being closely monitored and that he had the authority to take action against anyone who betrayed the party or disregarded its discipline.

Leaders and activists from different levels of Shailkupa upazila BNP attended the meeting.
