The Special Response Battalion (SRB)-6 has arrested two persons, including prime accused and mastermind Miraj, in connection with the severe hacking of police inspector Shah Alam’s wrists with a sharp cleaver during a robbery in Khulna.
The other arrested individual has been identified as Md Ibrahim Gazi.
Lt Col Fayezul Arefin, commanding officer of SRB-3, disclosed these details at a press conference held at the SRB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, on Friday afternoon.
He said the suspects were arrested on Thursday during separate drives conducted in the Kalabagan area under Sonadanga Police Station and the Tutpara area under Khulna Sadar Police Station in Khulna city.
According to SRB, Shah Alam (43), an unarmed police inspector working at the Khulna District Circle Office, fell victim to muggers on 9 October while travelling to the Police Club in a rickshaw in front of Collegiate School under Sadar Police Station in Khulna city.
Three unidentified muggers intercepted him, looted his money and mobile phone, and hacked him severely above both wrists with a sharp cleaver. He was rescued with the assistance of the officer-in-charge (OC) of Khulna Police Station and a mobile team from Sonadanga Police Station.
Shah Alam was initially admitted to City Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
As the condition of his hands was critical, a doctor from the surgery department referred him to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment, where he is currently undergoing medical care.
Following the incident, SI Md Awal Hossain, sub-inspector at the Khulna District Detective Branch, filed a case as plaintiff against unidentified suspects with Khulna Sadar Police Station.
Analysis of past crime records revealed that Miraj, alias Speaker Miraj, faces multiple cases involving grievous hurt, theft, and robbery at Arangghata and Sadar police stations under Khulna Metropolitan Police.
Meanwhile, Md Ibrahim Gazi has a case against him under the Narcotics Control Act at Khulna Sadar Police Station.
During primary interrogation, both Miraj and Ibrahim admitted their direct involvement in the crime, SRB informed. The SRB official added that the arrestees will be handed over to Khulna Metropolitan Police Sadar Police Station for further legal action.
