A rebellious 14-year-old Avatar is set to chart his own path in Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, a new animated prequel series coming to Paramount+. The series will follow Kuruk as he travels the world to master the four elements, defying tradition while dodging an angry teacher, rowdy pirates and chaotic spirits.

According to Paramount+, the franchise’s creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, announced the series at New York Comic Con on 9 October 2026. The event also brought fans a first look at Kuruk and his pet, Nikik, and confirmation that Avatar: Seven Havens will return for Books 3 and 4.

The new series centres on a young Kuruk who rejects thousands of years of tradition in favour of learning to master water, earth, fire and air through globe-trotting adventures. He aims to help the world in his own way while staying ahead of his furious mentor, pirates and unpredictable spirits. The show combines fantasy, adventure, action and comedy.

Konietzko revealed at the convention that the story begins during a time of peace, giving Kuruk a different starting point from the world-threatening conflicts that drive other stories in the franchise. He also shared his creative vision on Instagram, writing: “I had the idea to do a comedy series about Kuruk that flipped the script on the way he had been portrayed in the Avatar canon thus far, one that focused on a group of Water Tribe kids travelling the world together.”

Kuruk belongs to the Water Tribe and appears in the wider universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. He comes before Avatar Kyoshi in the cycle through which the Avatar’s powers pass from one lifetime to the next. Earlier stories explored his tragic later life and his struggles with dark spirits. Wave of Chaos will instead focus on his teenage years, before the eras of Kyoshi, Roku, Aang and Korra.

The first-look artwork introduces Kuruk alongside Nikik, his animal companion. Konietzko described the creature as a “koala-otter”. The images were unveiled at New York Comic Con on 9 October, offering fans an early glimpse of the characters. The series has not yet announced a voice actor for Kuruk.

Konietzko, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: Seven Havens, created Wave of Chaos and serves as showrunner. He will also executive produce the series alongside DiMartino. Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios are producing the project.

Longtime franchise collaborators Kihyun Ryu and Tim Hedrick will serve as co-executive producers. Ryu created Kuruk’s character artwork, while Shemsu Turner designed and drew Nikik. Janet Varney, who voiced Korra, will direct the voice performances.

Paramount+ has yet to announce a premiere date. The series will join the streaming service’s expanding Avatar universe, which includes Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Avatar: Seven Havens and Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.

Although Wave of Chaos and Seven Havens belong to the same wider franchise and featured in the same New York Comic Con presentation, the creators have not confirmed a direct story connection between the two series. Meanwhile, the renewal of Seven Havens for Books 3 and 4 extends the story of Avatar Pavi and her twin sister, Nisha.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, an older Kuruk, voiced by Jim Meskimen, described his younger self as someone who went with the flow. The new prequel will offer a fresh look at that earlier chapter, following a teenage Avatar determined to learn the elements on his own terms.
