Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint, celebrated for ‘On the Waterfront’ and Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘North by Northwest’, has died at her Los Angeles home aged 102.

Saint won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for ‘On the Waterfront’ in 1955, playing Edie Doyle opposite Marlon Brando. The role established her as one of Hollywood’s leading performers of the era and made her the oldest living Oscar winner.

She reached another career high in ‘North by Northwest’ (1959), playing the sophisticated spy Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant. Her other notable films included ‘Exodus’, ‘All Fall Down’, ‘The Sandpiper’, ‘The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming’ and ‘Loving’.

Saint also maintained a strong television career. She won an Emmy in 1990 for the NBC miniseries ‘People Like Us’ after four previous nominations. She later appeared in ‘Moonlighting’ and played Martha Kent in ‘Superman Returns’ (2006).

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Saint began her career in radio before moving into television, theatre and film. She earned two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her contributions to both film and television.

She is survived by her children Darrell and Laurette, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
