Lionel Messi’s final match for Argentina remained goalless at half time as Benin frustrated the hosts at the Estadio Monumental on Wednesday.
The first half was filled with tributes for Messi as he made his final appearance for the national team. The stadium was packed well before the scheduled start. A huge Messi shirt covered the pitch as supporters sang for the Argentina captain.
The celebrations also delayed the start of the match. Kick off eventually came around half an hour later than originally planned. The tributes continued after the game started. Play stopped in the 10th minute for a one minute ovation for Messi.
Fireworks went off around the stadium as supporters chanted “Messi, Messi.” The 39 year old saluted the crowd before play resumed.
Argentina controlled most of the first half and Messi had several chances to open the scoring. He tested Benin goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou with a shot from distance before going close again after Rodrigo De Paul sent a cross into the area.
Messi then had another opportunity from a free kick around 30 yards from goal. His effort was on target, but Dandjinou made the save. Lautaro Martinez later found Messi with a driven cross, but the captain sent his volley wide.
Benin also threatened on the counter attack. Junior Olaitan had their best opportunities, but Emiliano Martinez dealt with the danger.
Argentina kept searching for a breakthrough, but Benin held firm as the first half ended 0-0.
