Four cases have been filed over the attacks during a footpath eviction drive in Dhaka’s Mirpur-10 area. Twenty-six people have been arrested so far in connection with the incidents.
Three of the cases were filed with Mirpur Model Police Station and one with Kafrul Police Station.
Of the three cases, two were filed by police, while the other was filed by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). The case lodged with Kafrul Police Station was also filed by the DNCC.
The cases were filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act on charges of creating panic, sabotage, arson and vandalism.
The DNCC began the eviction drive around 9:30am on Wednesday, targeting the illegal occupation of footpaths from the Mirpur-10 intersection to Hope Market.
At one stage of the drive, an excavator struck an electric wire while removing makeshift shops beneath Baitul Quddus Jame Mosque Market adjacent to Hope Market, triggering a fire.
Police became involved in clashes with hawkers when they arrived at the scene.
Police fired tear gas shells after hawkers allegedly hurled brickbats at officers. Several people were injured in the incident.
