A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Rakibul Hasan, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station, to prison after a total of seven days of remand in two phases in a sedition case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order after Inspector Jehad Hossain of the Detective Branch (DB) Gulshan Zonal Team, the investigating officer of the case, produced Rakibul before the court and prayed to keep him detained in prison.
Sub-Inspector Tarequr Rahman of the prosecution department said that there was no bail application on behalf of the accused.
Earlier, the court had granted a five-day remand for Rakibul last Thursday and a two-day remand on Monday.
The case follows an audio recording that recently went viral on social media under former OC Rakibul’s name. In the audio recording, a person was heard criticising the government, administration, army, and police on various issues, including the return to the country of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India after being ousted in a student-people mass movement.
However, it could not be confirmed whether the voice in the circulated audio belonged to former OC Rakibul.
Following criticism after the audio surfaced, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) withdrew OC Rakibul from his post and formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the matter. Members of the committee subsequently interrogated him at the DB office.
He was later shown arrested after Inspector Subrata Debnath of the same police station filed a case against him.
