Poet and former popular actor Rifat Chowdhury, who is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, has received financial assistance and support from Actors Equity Bangladesh.
A delegation from the organisation visited Rifat at the hospital on Tuesday, 22 September, to enquire about his condition and provide immediate financial assistance. The organisation also assured him that it would remain by his side if he needs further help.
Rifat reportedly spent two days on the hospital floor after failing to secure a bed following his admission. Although a bed was later arranged, the rising cost of his treatment created another financial strain.
Actors Equity Bangladesh general secretary and actor Rashed Mamun Apu confirmed the development in a social media post. He said the organisation remains committed to supporting its members during times of crisis.
Rifat has been suffering from serious complications affecting his waist and legs for a long time. His condition has left him unable to walk normally.
The actor has also remained largely isolated from his family for years. With limited contact with colleagues from the entertainment industry, he had gradually disappeared from public view. During his illness, he has been facing much of his struggle alone.
Actors Equity Bangladesh said it would continue providing assistance to Rifat according to his needs.
