Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Choudhury remained on the bench for the entire game as Sheffield United suffered a shock exit from the EFL Cup on Thursday.
The Championship side lost 1-0 to League Two club Fleetwood Town in their third round clash at Highbury.
A Rhys Norrington-Davies own goal in the second half proved decisive. The defender headed Danny Andrew’s cross into his own net from close range in the 57th minute.
Fleetwood had looked dangerous before taking the lead. Mark Helm tested Sheffield United goalkeeper Michael Cooper early on, while Lewis McCann and Crispin McLean also forced saves.
Sheffield United had their chances. Ollie Arblaster saw an early effort blocked, while Tom Cannon put the ball into the net but the move was ruled out for offside.
Fleetwood grew stronger as the game went on and controlled much of the second half. They also had an effort ruled out for offside and twice hit the woodwork.
Sheffield United pushed for an equaliser late in the game. Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch denied Sydie Peck and Ben Brereton Diaz, while another Cannon effort was blocked.
But Chris Wilder’s side could not find a way back into the match.
The defeat ended Sheffield United’s EFL Cup campaign, while Fleetwood reached the last 16 of the competition for the first time in their history.
Fleetwood will now host Premier League champions Arsenal in the fourth round.
