Bangladesh’s software industry was built on a story of opportunity. A young population, growing technical capability, improving English communication skills and a significant cost advantage allowed Bangladesh to enter the global technology supply chain.
Companies from developed markets could access software development talent in Bangladesh at a much lower cost than in countries such as China, India or the West.
That model created a generation of software professionals, entrepreneurs and freelancers. Local software companies expanded. Outsourcing became a source of foreign earnings.
Thousands of young people saw technology as a pathway to employment and global opportunity. Bangladesh proved that it could compete in the digital economy.
But the foundation of that success is now being tested by the fastest technological shift the software industry has ever experienced: artificial intelligence. The question is no longer whether artificial intelligence will affect Bangladesh’s software sector. It already has.
The more important question is whether Bangladesh can transform itself from a country known mainly for affordable software labour into a country capable of building intelligent technology solutions. Because the old advantage is weakening.
For years, Bangladesh’s software proposition was straightforward: global companies could reduce costs by outsourcing technology work to Bangladesh.
A company that needed software development but did not want to pay international market rates could hire Bangladeshi developers. The country’s engineers provided a competitive combination of affordability and technical capability.
That opportunity helped create Bangladesh’s outsourcing ecosystem. But artificial intelligence has changed the economics.
Many software tasks that previously required several developers can now be completed faster with AI-assisted tools. In many cases, artificial intelligence can perform around 70 per cent of routine development work, reducing the amount of human effort required.
This does not mean software engineers will disappear. But it does mean that the value of basic coding ability is declining.
The industry is moving towards professionals who can understand business requirements, design solutions, manage AI tools and solve complex problems.
The person who can simply write code will face greater pressure. The person who understands why the code is needed and how it creates business value will become more important.
That is the fundamental shift Bangladesh must prepare for. The impact of artificial intelligence is already changing recruitment decisions.
Software companies that previously hired larger teams for projects are now reassessing their workforce requirements. Many companies have reduced recruitment because productivity per employee has increased.
Across the industry, companies are reporting recruitment reductions of around 50 per cent on average, with some reducing hiring by 30 per cent and others by as much as 70 per cent.
This does not mean there will be no jobs. It means the nature of jobs is changing. Previously, a fresh graduate could enter the software industry, develop programming skills gradually and build a career through experience.
That traditional entry route is becoming more difficult because many junior-level tasks are exactly the areas where artificial intelligence is improving fastest. The challenge is particularly serious because Bangladesh’s technology workforce is still heavily concentrated around execution-based work.
A significant part of Bangladesh’s freelance and outsourcing economy developed around basic digital services. Many freelancers built careers through search engine optimisation, simple website development, translation, data processing, content editing and similar tasks.
These services created income opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people. But these are also areas where artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming capable.
A 100-page document that once required hours of human review can now be analysed within minutes. A basic website that requires a developer can now be created using AI-assisted platforms. A software script that previously had to be purchased from a marketplace can increasingly be generated or customised through AI.
The impact will be especially difficult for freelancers who depend on repetitive digital work.
Bangladesh has often celebrated the size of its freelance community, with estimates reaching around 6.5 lakh freelancers. But the number of genuinely active freelancers has always been debated. Industry estimates suggest the active number may be closer to one to one-and-a-half lakh.
Even among this active group, many are concentrated in areas now facing the strongest AI disruption. The issue is not simply job loss. It is a change in the economic value of certain skills.
Bangladesh’s international opportunity is also being reshaped. The outsourcing model worked because companies in developed countries could save money by transferring work to lower-cost locations. But artificial intelligence is lowering production costs everywhere.
A European company that previously outsourced a software project through an intermediary may now ask whether AI tools can complete a large part of that work internally.
The challenge is therefore not only Bangladesh’s competitiveness against India or China. The competition is increasingly between human-driven development and AI-assisted development.
Low-cost talent alone will not be enough. Countries that succeed will be those that combine technology skills with industry knowledge, creativity and the ability to solve real-world problems.
Artificial intelligence has arrived at a difficult moment for Bangladesh’s software industry. The sector was already facing pressure from a broader economic slowdown. Government demand, which had been a major driver of software growth, has slowed significantly.
During the Digital Bangladesh and Smart Bangladesh initiatives, government agencies were encouraged to adopt technology solutions. Ministries and departments were given targets for implementing digital projects, creating significant opportunities for local software companies.
That momentum has weakened.
After the political transition, government technology projects reduced sharply. According to industry observations, projects that previously generated significant demand have fallen substantially, with some estimates suggesting activity has declined from around 100 projects annually to only 30 or 40.
This has affected software companies that depended on public-sector digital transformation.
The private sector has also become cautious. When businesses face electricity shortages, gas shortages, inflation and uncertainty, software investment is often postponed. For many companies, software becomes a “later” investment.
A factory cannot operate without electricity. Production cannot continue without energy. During difficult economic periods, many businesses prioritise survival and working capital over digital transformation.
As a result, software companies are facing pressure from both sides: reduced domestic demand and changing global demand.
Despite the disruption, artificial intelligence is not only a threat. It can become Bangladesh’s next opportunity if companies and workers adapt. The future technology worker will not simply be a programmer.
Demand will rise for people who understand artificial intelligence applications, data analytics, automation, cybersecurity, product development and industry-specific technology solutions.
One important area will be quality assurance.
Artificial intelligence can generate software quickly, but businesses still need professionals who can understand requirements, test systems, identify weaknesses and ensure that technology solves the correct problem.
Human judgement remains essential.
A bank does not need software simply because technology exists. It needs better risk assessment, faster customer service and improved decision-making. A factory does not need software for appearance. It needs efficiency, productivity and lower costs. A government agency does not need technology because it is fashionable. It needs systems that improve public services.
The ability to connect technology with practical problems will determine future success.
One major change will be the importance of industry knowledge. A person who understands government approval processes, banking systems, manufacturing operations or supply-chain challenges has knowledge that a general software developer does not.
Artificial intelligence can help write code. But it cannot replace deep understanding of how a business, institution or industry actually works. The future will belong to professionals who combine technical skills with sector knowledge. This is why Bangladesh’s education and training system must change.
Bangladesh has invested heavily in technology training programmes. But producing large numbers of trainees does not automatically create a skilled workforce. The country needs to move away from certificate-based training towards capability-based learning.
Young people need practical experience using AI tools, analysing data, solving business problems and building real products. The technology ecosystem must also recognise that formal institutions alone cannot keep pace with rapid technological change.
Universities in Bangladesh have historically remained several years behind industry requirements. That gap is becoming more dangerous because artificial intelligence is evolving much faster than traditional academic systems. Universities, companies and policymakers need closer cooperation.
Bangladesh’s software industry is not facing the end of its story. It is facing the end of its first chapter. The first chapter was about proving that Bangladesh could participate in the global technology economy through affordable talent. The next chapter must be about innovation, intelligence and problem-solving. The country cannot compete only by offering cheaper developers. It must compete by offering better solutions.
Artificial intelligence may reduce demand for some forms of software work, but it will also create new markets for countries prepared to use it.
Bangladesh has already built a technology workforce. It has entrepreneurs, companies and international experience. Many firms have demonstrated that Bangladeshi companies can develop solutions for government agencies and international markets.
The challenge now is to move from being a supplier of affordable digital labour to becoming a creator of intelligent technology products and services. Artificial intelligence will not decide Bangladesh’s technology future. The decisions made by policymakers, businesses, universities and young professionals will.
