Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s old conversation with David Letterman has resurfaced, bringing fresh attention to her views on family, independence and the idea of leaving home. The actor questioned why living separately from parents should be seen as a sign of adulthood or freedom.
According to NDTV, Aishwarya discussed the cultural difference between India and the US during her appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. She spoke about the American expectation that young adults should eventually leave their parents’ homes and explained why she viewed family life differently.
“I wouldn’t understand why, but that’s probably because that’s the way of life there. Would that generally be so? Would that be like everybody has to or does move out? Is there like a social rule?” she asked.
Aishwarya explained that her own career already kept her away from her family for long periods. Constant travel meant she had little time at home, making the moments she shared with her parents even more precious.
“By virtue of my job, I’m traveling out. You get to spend very little time with your family. We hardly get to meet each other, except on the one odd day we really get to spend time, have dinner together. And that’s rare, and we cherish it,” she said.
The discussion then turned to independence. When Letterman asked whether she considered herself an independent woman, Aishwarya answered yes but challenged the assumption that independence required a person to live away from their family.
“Yes, yes. And I don’t see any reason why moving away from your family is a statement of independence,” she said.
Her comments highlighted a broader cultural difference in attitudes towards family life. While moving out can be viewed as a natural step towards independence in the US, Aishwarya argued that staying close to one’s family does not make a person less independent.
Aishwarya made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar. She later established herself as a prominent name in Indian cinema.
