A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the seizure of 24 parcels of land and two cars belonging to former member of parliament (MP) Golam Faruk Khandaker Prince in Pabna. The court also ordered the freezing of 14 bank accounts registered under his name.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following an application filed by Papon Kumar Saha, an assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the application, the value of the land in question is shown to be more than Tk2 crore, while the value of the two cars was not specified in the document.
The ACC said in its application that during his tenure as an MP and a public official, Golam Faruk Khandaker Prince abused his power with dishonest intent to illegally acquire and possess assets worth Tk9 crore 91 lakh, which are inconsistent with his known sources of income.
Furthermore, the application noted that Prince deposited Tk212 crore 67 lakh 72 thousand 100 and withdrew Tk212 crore 66 lakh through 36 bank accounts in his name. A total of Tk425 crore 34 lakh in unusual and suspicious transactions occurred across these accounts.
The commission alleged that Prince committed money laundering-related offences by converting, transferring, and handing over money or properties to conceal or disguise their illegal source, asserting that the funds were earned through corruption and bribery.
The ACC mentioned in its application that the accused is attempting to transfer, shift, or otherwise dispose of movable and immovable assets in his name or interest.
The anti-graft body added that if these properties are transferred or sold before the disposal of the case, it could result in financial loss.
