The government has approved the purchase of four liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes to meet fuel demand in the power and industrial sectors amid a gas supply shortage.
The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
The four LNG cargoes will be supplied by international suppliers Aramco Trading Singapore, BP Singapore and Vitol Asia, according to a Finance Ministry statement.
Aramco Trading Singapore quoted $27.54 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) for one cargo and $23.98 per MMBtu for another. BP Singapore quoted $28.03 per MMBtu, while Vitol Asia quoted $26.66 per MMBtu.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division said the LNG will be imported through an international tender process under government procurement rules.
The government has also approved the import of 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser from Morocco to meet farmers’ demand, including 40,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and 30,000 tonnes of triple super phosphate (TSP).
The DAP import will cost $35.76 million under a government-to-government agreement, with the price set at $894 per tonne. The committee also approved the import of TSP at $669.33 per tonne.

Meanwhile, the government approved the construction of an 11-storey headquarters building for the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at a cost of Tk171.90 crore.
M Jamal & Company Limited was selected for the construction work as the lowest acceptable bidder after an e-GP open tender process. Ten bids were submitted, of which six were found technically acceptable.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council approved the project’s first revised proposal on 15 October 2019. The implementation period has been set from 1 July 2019, to 31 December 2028.
The project includes construction of an 11-storey RAB headquarters building on a 15-storey foundation, with the director general’s office, three basement floors, parking facilities and other required facilities.
It also includes a three-storey magazine and coat building, a three-storey substation building, warehouse, pump and water reservoir, deep tube well, water supply and distribution system, internal roads, vehicle washing facilities, rainwater harvesting system, salami platform, electrical and mechanical systems, external electrical connections, lifts, air conditioning and local network facilities.
