Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming crime drama Daayra, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, will feature just one song, the filmmaker has revealed, writes NDTV.
The trailer of the police procedural was released recently, introducing a story centred on the investigation into a brutal crime involving a young woman.
Reports had suggested that the film would follow in the footsteps of Meghna’s father Gulzar’s 1973 crime drama Achanak by not featuring any songs.
However, Meghna clarified at a press conference that Daayra does have a song—and it will appear at the very end of the film.
“There’s a bit of a plot twist over there. Daayra has one song. It will come at the end of the film,” Meghna said, explaining that the song was intended to provide a sense of closure after the audience had been taken through the film’s two-hour journey.
She added that the filmmakers felt a song would serve as the best “full stop” to the story.
The lyrics have been written by her father, Gulzar.
The comparison with Achanak emerged because the 1973 film, directed by Gulzar and written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, was also a sensitive crime drama without any songs.
Inspired by the 1958 K. M. Nanavati v. State of Maharashtra case, Achanak featured a background score composed by Vasant Desai and earned Gulzar a Filmfare nomination for Best Director.
The Nanavati case has also inspired other Indian films, including the 1963 film Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke and Akshay Kumar’s 2016 release Rustom.
Meanwhile, Daayra stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran as two senior police officers navigating the complex world of juvenile crime.
According to the makers, the film is inspired by true events and unfolds in the aftermath of a crime that grips the nation and triggers widespread public outrage.
As two investigations begin, the officers find themselves approaching the same system and questions of duty and justice from opposing perspectives, as they confront a case that challenges their understanding of right and wrong.
