Police have recovered five bodies from different parts of Gazipur in separate incidents within a single day.
Among the incidents, a youth named Niloy Sarker was allegedly hacked to death in Kapasia over a dispute involving grass cutting. In Kaliakair, police recovered the half-decomposed hanging body of an unidentified man from a jungle.
In another incident, the body of a five-year-old child was recovered from the Brahmaputra River in Kapasia three days after he went missing. The body of a six-year-old child was recovered from the Bangshi River in Kaliakair after the child went missing while bathing. Meanwhile, a speech-impaired youth was killed after being hit by a train near Mouchak Railway Station.
The bodies were recovered from different locations in Kapasia and Kaliakair between Saturday morning and noon.
Youth hacked to death over grass-cutting dispute
A youth named Niloy Sarker was allegedly hacked to death following a dispute with his cousin Russell over cutting grass for cattle at Pabur Dakshinpara Bolkhela Bazar area in Kapasia.
Niloy was the son of Monir Sarker of the same area.
Police and local residents said an argument broke out between Niloy and Russell at the market around 11am over the grass-cutting issue. Later, Niloy was allegedly attacked while returning home.
Locals said Russell attacked Niloy with a sharp weapon near the paved road beside Abdur Rashid Orphanage, hitting him on the head. Critically injured, Niloy was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur, where doctors declared him dead.
Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nasir Ahmed said, “A youth was killed following a dispute over land. The accused Russell has gone into hiding after the incident. Efforts are underway to arrest him.”
Unidentified man found hanging in jungle
Police recovered the half-decomposed hanging body of an unidentified man from a jungle in Galachipa area of Kaliakair around noon.
Local residents spotted the body hanging from a tree and informed police. Later, police recovered the body from the spot. His identity could not be established immediately.
Kaliakair Police Station Inspector (Operations) Rabiul Islam said, “The half-decomposed body of a man was recovered from the scene. It is being investigated whether it was a suicide or another incident. The actual cause of death will be known after receiving the autopsy report.”
Child’s body recovered three days after disappearance
The body of five-year-old Zahid Hasan was recovered from the Brahmaputra River in Kapasia three days after he went missing.
Locals spotted the body floating near a river ghat around 8am, about 400 metres from his home. Police later recovered the body after receiving the information.
Zahid Hasan was the son of Mizanur Rahman of Khirati village under Ghagtia Union.
Child’s body recovered from Bangshi River
The body of six-year-old Sathi Akter was recovered from the Bangshi River in Kaliakair nearly 24 hours after she went missing while bathing.
Sathi drowned and went missing in the river at Baroitoli area around 10:30am on Friday. A Fire Service diving team conducted a search until 5pm, but failed to locate her.
The body surfaced in the river the following morning. Fire Service personnel later reached the spot and recovered it.
Kaliakair Fire Service official Alamgir Kabir said the child could not be found despite a day-long search on Friday.
Youth killed after being hit by train
A speech-impaired youth named Abu Bakar was killed after being hit by a train near Mouchak Railway Station in Gazipur.
The accident occurred on the Joydebpur-Dhaka railway line around 10am.
Joydebpur Railway Police Camp-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed said the victim’s home was near the railway station. Family members recovered the body and took it home.
