Victor Munoz rescued Liverpool from a frustrating defeat with a stunning late equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday.
The Spanish forward struck in the 82nd minute to deny Forest victory in Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League home match in charge. The result leaves Liverpool still searching for their first league win under their new manager after two matches.
Forest looked on course for all three points after Morgan Gibbs-White restored their lead from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.
The penalty was awarded after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson brought down Neco Williams inside the area. Gibbs-White kept his composure to send Alisson the wrong way and put Forest 2-1 ahead.
Liverpool’s response came through Munoz, who was making his first start for the club. The newcomer collected the ball on the edge of the box, spun away from his marker and unleashed a powerful effort that flew in off the underside of the crossbar.
It was a moment of quality that spared Liverpool another damaging result.
Forest had taken the lead in the 24th minute through Dan Ndoye. The move began with goalkeeper Matz Sels launching a long ball forward, before Gibbs-White released Ndoye with a clever pass. The Swiss forward raced through and calmly finished into the bottom corner.
Liverpool thought they had equalised before the interval when Florian Wirtz found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
They eventually drew level in the 60th minute. Cody Gakpo escaped his marker on the left before sending a low delivery across the six-yard box. Forest failed to make contact and Alexander Isak was on hand to tap into an empty net.
Liverpool pushed for a winner, but Forest held firm until Munoz produced his late intervention.
