The long-awaited sequel to Mel Brooks’ cult classic Spaceballs received a warm welcome at San Diego Comic-Con, with one moment stealing the spotlight above all others — the return of actor Rick Moranis, writes The Hollywood Reporter.
Amazon MGM’s Spaceballs: The New One, a follow-up to the 1987 sci-fi parody, made its Hall H debut on Friday, drawing loud cheers from fans eager to see the beloved franchise return after nearly four decades.
Moranis, who played the iconic villain Dark Helmet in the original film, made his first-ever Comic-Con appearance.
The actor, known for classics including Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, has largely stayed away from acting for much of the past two decades.
Following a playful callback to the original film’s famous “comb the audience” gag, Moranis appeared on stage to a standing ovation as fans chanted his name.
Director Kevin Smith, who moderated the panel, welcomed the veteran actor by saying, “You made our childhoods better.”
Moranis was joined by returning cast member Daphne Zuniga, who reprises her role as Princess Vespa, alongside director Josh Greenbaum, actors Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman, and writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit.
Gad revealed that the sequel was inspired by his daughter after they watched Spaceballs together.
When she asked why there had never been a sequel despite a joke in the original film promising one, Gad said the idea stayed with him and eventually led him to pitch the project to Mel Brooks.
While explaining the pitch, Gad recalled jokingly referencing modern Star Wars films and characters before imitating Brooks’ humorous response.
The legendary filmmaker did not appear in person but sent a pre-recorded video thanking fans for keeping Spaceballs alive for nearly 40 years.
The panel also featured behind-the-scenes videos showing Brooks reuniting with Moranis and other original cast members.
Greenbaum shared one memorable piece of advice Brooks gave him before filming began.
Instead of offering filmmaking wisdom, Brooks joked: “Don’t say ‘Cut!’ first. It’s ‘Action!’, and then ‘Cut!'”
Greenbaum said the moment reminded him not to take the project too seriously and simply enjoy making the film.
Unlike many Comic-Con presentations, Amazon MGM did not unveil a trailer or exclusive footage. Instead, the panel focused on the cast’s reunion, behind-the-scenes stories and the film’s creative direction.
According to Gad, the sequel explores modern Hollywood’s obsession with nostalgia while satirising today’s franchise-driven film industry, much as the original mocked the Star Wars phenomenon of the 1980s.
The panel also featured a humorous segment in which Lewis Pullman read a fictional letter supposedly written by his father, actor Bill Pullman, before fans were shown a mock roadmap for a “Spaceballs Cinematic Universe” — a playful parody of Marvel Studios’ long-term franchise plans.
Spaceballs: The New One is expected to bring together original cast members and a new generation of actors as it revives one of cinema’s most beloved sci-fi comedies.
