Nearly a decade after Sherlock aired its final episode, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have reunited in public, delighting fans and reigniting speculation about a possible fifth season of the acclaimed BBC drama.
According to ScreenRant, the former co-stars were photographed together on 10 July at Wimbledon. They attended day 12 of the tournament alongside Cumberbatch’s wife, Sophie Hunter, and watched the men’s singles semi-final on Centre Court between Alexander Zverev and British wildcard Arthur Fery.
Premiering in 2010, Sherlock reimagined Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories for the modern era. Starring Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Freeman as Dr John Watson, the series blended contemporary technology with classic mysteries as the pair built one of television’s most memorable partnerships.
The series became a global success, although repeated speculation about a fifth season has never materialised. Speaking at the Italian Global Series Festival in June 2025, co-creator and co-writer Mark Gatiss admitted returning to the series would be difficult. He added that both Cumberbatch and Freeman no longer wanted to continue the show.
The two actors also appeared to hold different views about the series’ future. Freeman previously said he no longer enjoyed making the programme as much as he had in its early years and described parts of the show’s intense fandom as stressful. Cumberbatch later told The Telegraph that he did not share that view, saying, “It’s pretty pathetic if that’s all it takes to let you not want to take a grip of your reality. What, because of expectations? I don’t know. I don’t necessarily agree with that.”
His remarks sparked widespread discussion and fuelled long-standing speculation that the pair shared a strained off-screen relationship. Vanity Fair even described it as “the most politely worded mini-feud in history”. Their appearance together at Wimbledon has now prompted fans to believe any past tension may have eased.
Although there are still no confirmed plans for Sherlock season 5, renewed hope has emerged. As reported by Digital Spy, co-creator Steven Moffat said on the Half the Picture podcast, which aired on 5 July 2026, that he would gladly revisit the series if the cast agreed. “If I can persuade everybody else, of course I’d revisit it,” he said.
Whether the Wimbledon reunion signals something bigger or simply reflects a friendship rekindled remains unclear. Even if Sherlock never returns to 221B Baker Street, the reunion has reassured fans that any rumours of a lingering “mini-feud” may now belong firmly in the past.
