Five people from two families, including a five‑year‑old child, were killed in separate landslide incidents in Aziznagar area of Lama upazila, Bandarban.
According to Fire Service sources, the incidents occurred between 4am and 4:30am Thursday at Paglir Chhara along the Mission Road.
Bandarban Superintendent of Police Md Wahabul Islam Khondkar confirmed the fatalities, saying fire service personnel, police, and local residents recovered the bodies.
Police identified the victims as Aziznagar residents Md Yunus, 40, his wife Ranu Akter, 35, and their son Md Soleman, 5.
In another incident nearby, rescuers recovered the bodies of Mohammad Jewel, 34, and his wife Kulsum Akter, 25, who were buried under a collapsed wall and earth.
Locals said they heard the landslides and cries for help in the early morning and rushed to the scene. Fire service and police later joined the rescue operation and recovered all five bodies.
The locals noted that days of heavy rainfall have softened the soil on hillsides and stream banks, warning that unless residents are moved from vulnerable locations, further major damage could occur.
